Senior PHP Developer

Job Role OverviewYou will be responsible for the development and continuous improvement of our web and e-commerce platform, with a strong focus on PHP, WordPress and WooCommerce.This is a hands-on development role involving custom PHP development, backend functionality, database optimisation, integrations, performance and scalability.Working closely with our Marketing, Product and Software Engineering teams, you will develop new functionality, improve customer experience, build integrations and help introduce AI-powered capabilities.Where appropriate, you will also contribute to our wider web platform, including Angular applications and shared frontend components.Key ResponsibilitiesBackend DevelopmentDevelop clean, secure and maintainable PHP 8.x code.Design and develop complex backend functionality.Develop and improve custom WordPress and WooCommerce functionality.Build and maintain custom plugins, APIs and integrations.Optimise MySQL databases and SQL queries.Improve application performance, scalability and reliability.Reduce technical debt and improve existing code.Debug and resolve complex application and performance issues.WordPress & WooCommerce DevelopmentDevelop custom WordPress functionality rather than relying solely on themes and third-party plugins.Build and maintain custom WordPress plugins.Develop and enhance WooCommerce functionality.Improve WooCommerce checkout and customer journeys.Work with WordPress internals, hooks, filters and APIs.Improve platform maintainability and performance.Performance & Customer ExperienceImprove website performance and Core Web Vitals.Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks.Improve website search and overall user experience.Support improvements aimed at increasing website conversion rates.Help ensure the platform remains stable and responsive as usage grows.Integrations & Wider Platform DevelopmentDevelop REST APIs and integrations with internal and external systems.Build integrations with platforms such as HubSpot, Stripe and other business systems.Develop AI-powered website features and automation.Improve platform monitoring and reliability.Work with other engineering teams to deliver new capabilities.Contribute to Angular applications and shared frontend components where appropriate.Essential Skills3+ years of commercial PHP development experience.Strong PHP 8.x and object-oriented programming skills.Strong MySQL and SQL experience.Experience developing complex backend functionality.REST API development and integration experience.Commercial experience with WordPress and WooCommerce.Good understanding of WordPress internals and custom plugin development.Experience developing custom WooCommerce functionality.JavaScript (ES6+), HTML5 and CSS3.Git and Composer.Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.Experience with application and database performance optimisation.Core Technology StackPHP 8.x | MySQL | WordPress | WooCommerce | REST APIs | JavaScript | HTML/CSS | Git | ComposerThe wider platform also uses technologies and services including:Angular | TypeScript | HubSpot | Stripe | Cloudflare | WP Engine | AI APIsExperience across all of these technologies is not required.Desirable SkillsAngular and TypeScript.Cloudflare and WP Engine.HubSpot and Stripe APIs.Elasticsearch or similar search technologies.Experience integrating AI APIs such as OpenAI.Experience working on high-traffic or large-scale web applications.Experience with e-commerce performance and optimisation.Familiarity with CI/CD and automated deployment processes.Personal AttributesWe're looking for someone who:Takes ownership and accountability.Is technically strong but also understands commercial priorities.Enjoys solving complex technical problems.Writes clean, maintainable and scalable code.Is comfortable working with existing systems as well as developing new functionality.Communicates effectively with technical and non-technical colleagues.Takes a proactive approach to improving performance, reliability and maintainability.Has a passion for building high-performing web applications.Other Details
