We work on the digital layer of the energy transition (energy data spaces and interoperability, AI and forecasting for grid and market operation, digital twins of networks and assets, flexibility and demand-side services, and the emerging generation of energy system foundation models). We apply this across the Energy sector working alongside TSOs, DSOs, utilities, aggregators, technology providers, European universities, and research institutes from all around Europe.π― The RoleWe are seeking a Senior Researcher to strengthen the research capability of our Energy Unit.This is a dual role, split broadly in equal measure between generating the ideas and opportunities that become our next projects, writing the proposals that win them, and leading the work once it is funded.What we need: Someone who genuinely understands energy systems (how power systems and energy markets work, who the actors are, where data sits and why it is hard to access, and which problems operators, utilities, aggregators, and regulators lose sleep over). On top of that, you need enough fluency in data and AI technologies to shape solutions, judge technical feasibility, and give clear direction to technical teams.We are looking for an energy systems researcher or engineer who has moved decisively into digitalisation (modelling, data, analytics, AI) and can hold a technical argument on both sides. You will not be asked to build code yourself, but the digital layer cannot be a black box to you.π‘ What You Will DoDrive Research Ideation: Monitor the state of the art, identify technological gaps, and translate emerging paradigms (AI/GenAI for energy, energy data spaces, digital twins, energy system foundation models) into concrete, fundable research concepts.Pipeline & Proposals: Co-develop the opportunity pipeline across Horizon Europe, Digital Europe, CETP, and national programmes. Lead competitive proposal writing (Excellence, Impact, methodology, work plans).Consortium Building: Engage grid operators, utilities, aggregators, energy communities, academic, and industrial partners to build strong consortia and represent Suite5 at a scientific level.Project & Scientific Leadership: Lead funded projects/work packages, owning scope, execution, and delivery. Define research methodologies and formal evaluation protocols for energy platforms in realistic grid, market, or building settings.Bridge Energy Reality & Tech: Work with system operators, market participants, asset owners, and engineers to ensure our designs survive real-world operational, regulatory, and commercial constraints.Mentorship & Representation: Act as a scientific reference point within the Unit, mentor junior researchers, and represent Suite5 across the European energy R&I ecosystem (BRIDGE initiative, info days, conferences, and workshops).π What You BringRequirements:Education: MSc in Electrical/Computer Engineering, Power Systems, Energy Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering with an energy focus, or a closely related discipline. Additional qualifications in Data Science/AI are highly valued.Experience: At least 5 years of substantive research and innovation experience with a track record in EU-funded R&I projects (Horizon Europe, H2020, Digital Europe, CETP, LIFE, or equivalent).Proposals: Demonstrable contribution to writing and winning competitive research proposals.Domain Knowledge: Solid grasp of practical energy systems (power system operation, electricity/flexibility markets, distributed energy resources, sector coupling, and energy data constraints).Tech Fluency: Working fluency in data and AI technologies applied to energy to evaluate feasibility and direct implementation teams.Skills: Exceptional scientific/technical writing in English, analytical mindset, and strong interpersonal leadership in cross-border teams.Domain Depth:Recognized expertise in power systems, energy markets, or energy planning combined with a serious, demonstrable move into the digital layer (modelling, data-driven methods, forecasting, grid-aware learning, flexibility optimisation, digital twins, energy data spaces).Preferred Qualifications:A PhD is welcomed and positively assessed (though not strictly required).Experience with energy system simulation tools, digital twins of assets/grids, or co-simulation approaches.Awareness of energy system foundation models and large-model approaches to time series/multi-modal energy data.Familiarity with energy data spaces, interoperability standards, critical infrastructure cybersecurity, and consumption data privacy.Record of peer-reviewed publications in reputable energy or AI venues.Proficiency with project management tools (Jira, MS Project, or equivalent).π What We OfferCompetitive compensation package commensurate with experience.Genuine scientific ownership and space to co-design research directions in energy digitalisation.Direct involvement in cutting-edge European R&I projects alongside grid operators, utilities, and top energy institutes.Support for publication, conference participation, and continued scientific development.Flexible hybrid working arrangements (Athens or Limassol).Clear pathways for professional growth within an expanding European footprint.π© ApplyIf this opportunity excites you and you think you are the right person for the role, we will be glad to receive your application!
