Our award-winning platform combines gamification, social connection, rewards, and AI features to drive meaningful, measurable behaviour change at scale.Founded in 2019, we now work with 400+ clients and have users in 150+ countries, and are trusted by global organisations including Diageo, McLaren Automotive, Heineken, Natwest, PwC, and many more. Behind the product is a platform that has to move activity, points, rewards, and social data reliably across a growing ecosystem of devices, partners, and services - at scale, in real time, and without getting it wrong. The OpportunityWe're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help lead the evolution of GoJoe's core platform. This is a backend-led, systems-focused role: you'll work on the services that power challenges, leaderboards, points, and rewards, and on the integration and data layers that connect GoJoe to a wide range of external platforms - from wearables and health data providers to rewards, communications, and analytics partners. You'll bring strong domain-driven design instincts, comfort with concurrency and scale, and the judgement to make good architectural calls and see them through. This is a senior role with real technical ownership in a small, remote-first engineering team: you'll help shape how we structure data, design integrations, and evolve our infrastructure as the platform grows, and you'll be expected to lead projects, not just execute tickets. What makes this differentReal ownership: lead the design and evolution of core platform services, not just ship features to specSystems that matter: scalable, concurrent, data-integrity-critical systems - leaderboards, points, and rewards depend on getting this rightIntegration depth: a genuinely varied integration surface - wearables, rewards platforms, communications, analytics - each with its own data shapes to map cleanly into our domain modelRemote-first: flexible, async-friendly working within a distributed teamMission that matters: preventative health at scale, measurably improving people’s wellbeingThe RoleAs Senior Software Engineer, you'll work primarily on the backend, across our NestJS/TypeScript services and the data layers underneath them (PostgreSQL, Redis, and others), with a strong understanding of the infrastructure they run on (AWS). You'll design and build the integration and data-mapping layers that bring in activity and events from external platforms - normalising, validating, and structuring that data so it flows cleanly into our domain model and out through internal services via gRPC.This is a hands-on senior role, working closely with product, design, and the wider development team in a remote-first environment. You'll take on meaningful technical decisions - service boundaries, data modelling, where complexity should live - and you'll be trusted to lead projects end to end: from design through delivery. This is a broad senior engineering role: while you'll go deep on specific systems, you'll also work across the platform and with other teams as business needs require. What you’ll doLead technical design – propose and own architectural decisions for core services, and see projects through from design to deliveryBuild for scale and concurrency – design services that handle high-volume, concurrent activity data without correctness or performance falling overOwn integrations – build and maintain integrations with external platforms (wearables and health-data providers, rewards providers, communications, analytics), including OAuth flows, webhooks, and sync logicDesign data mapping layers – translate varied external data shapes into clean, well-structured internal models, applying domain-driven design principlesWork across the backend – NestJS services, PostgreSQL/Sequelize, Redis, DynamoDB, and internal gRPC APIsUnderstand and shape infrastructure – work knowledgeably with our AWS-hosted, Terraform-managed infrastructure, and flag where it needs to evolveSafeguard data quality – handle edge cases, concurrency issues, timezones, and validation logic across servicesMentor and influence – bring senior judgement to code review, technical discussions, and planningCollaborate async – with a distributed product and engineering team; write clear docs and maintainable, well-tested codeWho You AreYou think in systems, not just features. You're comfortable owning ambiguous problems end to end, structuring messy real-world data into something clean and dependable, and making architectural calls with limited guidance. You lead by doing - proposing the right approach, pushing projects forward, and helping the team make good decisions. You communicate clearly, work well autonomously in a remote-first team, and use AI tools to work smarter and ship faster. What We’re Looking ForEssentialSeniority – extensive experience building and operating production backend systems at scale, with a track record of leading technical decisions and projectsScalable systems & concurrency – proven experience designing systems that handle concurrent access and high data volumes correctly and efficientlyAPI & platform integration – hands-on experience integrating with third-party APIs and platforms, including OAuth, webhooks, and building robust data pipelinesData mapping & modelling – strong ability to design integration and data-mapping layers, structuring data cleanly using domain-driven design principlesBackend & infrastructure – strong proficiency in a modern backend stack (TypeScript/Node preferred; Go or Python also welcome), and comfort reasoning about cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred)Leadership & communication – able to make and defend technical decisions, lead a project end to end, and communicate clearly in a distributed, async-first teamPreferredArchitecture – experience with event-driven or gRPC-based microservice architecturesWearables / integrations – experience with wearables, health data, or other high-volume third-party data integrationsDomain – interest or background in health, fitness, or wellbeing productsData & compliance – familiarity with handling personal/health data and standards such as GDPR, HIPAA, or ISO 27001Scale – high-volume data ingestion, queues/streaming, and observability toolingInterested? If you’d like to find out more, please reach out directly to the GoJoe team.Email: phil@gojoe.comWebsite: gojoe.com
