The RoleProvides specialist geotechnical engineering support and services for open pit operations and projects across the African Business Unit. This role acts as a tactical advisor on rock/soil mechanics, hydrology, and hydrogeology, managing geotechnical risk and embedding within site teams through routine deployments to optimize local technical capability. The Key ResponsibilitiesGeotechnical Design & Systems: Execute tactical open pit designs and reviews. Enforce Group data systems for collection, management (GeotAgg), and validation (PowerBi).Operational Assurance: Support technical compliance audits and reviews. Assist sites in creating actionable roadmaps to resolve data collection or structural model deviations.Site Deployment & Secondment: Act in seconded site roles for extended periods to directly drive workforce development, technical capability transfer, and operational compliance.Risk & Business Planning: Deliver functional data inputs to short- and medium-term plans to ensure ground control efficacy and regional asset optimization.Training & Coaching: Provide functional training to site personnel on data management systems, GMRi, and GRiP implementation. The Requirements Qualifications & ExperienceBachelor’s degree Geology, Mining, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline (post-graduate qualification is highly desirable).8 years modern mechanised operational (onsite) mining experience (i.e. jumbo development/ longhole open stoping, QAQC, risk management and data collection) Skills & Personal AttributesHas written/ developed Ground Control Management Plans (GCMP) and Trigger Action Response Procedures (TARP)Has developed and verified ground support designs for underground developmentExposure to paste backfill and Life of Mine (LOM) sequencingHas coached / developed junior engineersWillingness to travel extensively The Rewards Based in South Africa, this position offers a permanent contract with a competitive remuneration package.
