Ship Captain

Role DescriptionA Ship Captain is responsible for the overall command, safe navigation, operation, security, and management of a vessel, including the safety of passengers, crew, cargo, and the vessel itself. The role ensures that all voyage and onboard activities are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with maritime laws, international conventions, flag-state requirements, port regulations, classification standards, and company policies. The Captain serves as the vessel's senior authority and coordinates closely with the shipowner, vessel operator, marine superintendent, crew, port authorities, pilots, agents, and other maritime stakeholders.Key ResponsibilitiesAssume overall command and responsibility for the safe operation and navigation of the vessel.Ensure the safety of passengers, crew, cargo, vessel equipment, and the marine environment.Plan, review, and execute voyages in accordance with approved voyage plans, weather conditions, navigational requirements, and operational objectives.Navigate the vessel safely using radar, ECDIS, GPS, AIS, electronic charts, visual navigation, and other approved navigational systems.Monitor weather forecasts, sea conditions, tides, currents, traffic, navigational hazards, and other factors affecting vessel safety.Ensure compliance with international maritime conventions, flag-state regulations, port-state requirements, classification standards, and company procedures.Maintain safe navigation practices and ensure bridge procedures, watchkeeping standards, and navigational protocols are properly followed.Supervise and coordinate deck officers, engineers, ratings, and other crew members.Assign duties, responsibilities, watch schedules, and operational tasks to vessel personnel.Provide leadership, direction, training, coaching, and performance guidance to crew members.Maintain discipline, professional conduct, teamwork, and a positive safety culture onboard.Conduct and supervise vessel arrival, departure, anchoring, berthing, unberthing, mooring, and maneuvering operations.Coordinate with pilots, tugboats, port authorities, vessel agents, terminal operators, and other maritime personnel during port operations.Ensure safe cargo operations, including loading, unloading, stowage, securing, inspection, and monitoring where applicable.Verify cargo documentation, cargo plans, loading instructions, stability requirements, and securing arrangements.Monitor vessel stability, trim, draft, ballast operations, and weight distribution to ensure safe operating conditions.Ensure proper implementation of onboard safety-management systems, emergency procedures, drills, and contingency plans.Conduct and supervise emergency drills, including fire, abandon-ship, man-overboard, collision, grounding, pollution, and other emergency scenarios.Take immediate command and appropriate action during emergencies, accidents, equipment failures, severe weather, security incidents, or other critical situations.Coordinate emergency response with shore management, coast guards, maritime authorities, rescue organizations, and other relevant parties.Ensure proper maintenance and readiness of lifesaving appliances, firefighting equipment, navigation equipment, communication systems, and emergency systems.Monitor vessel machinery, propulsion systems, steering systems, electrical systems, and other critical equipment in coordination with the Chief Engineer and technical team.Ensure defects, breakdowns, safety concerns, and operational deficiencies are identified, reported, and addressed promptly.Review and approve operational, navigational, safety, maintenance, cargo, and voyage-related documentation as required.Maintain accurate deck logs, official logbooks, voyage records, incident reports, inspection records, and other required documentation.Ensure accurate and timely submission of arrival, departure, cargo, customs, immigration, port, and regulatory documentation.Communicate regularly with the shipowner, vessel operator, marine superintendent, company management, and shore-based operations teams.Report vessel performance, voyage progress, operational issues, incidents, delays, and significant developments to management.Monitor fuel consumption, voyage efficiency, operating costs, and resource utilization where applicable.Ensure proper implementation of pollution-prevention procedures and environmental-protection requirements.Prevent and respond appropriately to oil spills, hazardous-material incidents, waste-management issues, and marine pollution risks.Ensure compliance with MARPOL and other applicable environmental regulations.Maintain vessel security and implement appropriate measures in accordance with the vessel's security plan and applicable maritime-security requirements.Coordinate with port-security officers, terminal security, authorities, and relevant stakeholders during security-related matters.Ensure crew certificates, licenses, medical fitness documents, training records, and other required documentation remain valid.Monitor crew welfare, working hours, rest periods, accommodation standards, onboard health, and general welfare requirements.Address crew concerns, disputes, disciplinary matters, and welfare issues in accordance with company procedures and applicable regulations.Conduct inspections of accommodation, working areas, deck areas, safety equipment, cargo areas, and other vessel facilities.Ensure proper housekeeping, cleanliness, sanitation, and onboard living standards.Support vessel inspections, audits, surveys, class inspections, port-state-control inspections, and regulatory examinations.Ensure corrective actions resulting from inspections, audits, incidents, or deficiencies are properly implemented and documented.Maintain strong knowledge of local ports, navigation requirements, maritime regulations, shipping routes, and operational risks.Evaluate operational risks and implement appropriate risk-control and mitigation measures.QualificationsBachelor's degree or recognized qualification in Nautical Science, Maritime Studies, Marine Transportation, or a related maritime discipline is preferred.Valid Certificate of Competency (CoC) as Master/Ship Captain appropriate to the vessel type, size, and operating area is required.Valid STCW certification and required maritime safety training are required.Significant sea-going experience as a deck officer, Chief Officer, or Master on relevant vessel types is strongly preferred.Extensive experience in vessel navigation, bridge management, voyage planning, cargo operations, port operations, and crew supervision.Strong knowledge of international maritime regulations, conventions, safety-management systems, and vessel-operating procedures.Strong knowledge of SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, ISM Code, ISPS Code, and other applicable maritime requirements.Excellent navigational skills and strong knowledge of ECDIS, radar, ARPA, AIS, GPS, GMDSS, and other bridge systems.Strong understanding of ship stability, trim, ballast management, cargo stowage, cargo securing, and vessel maneuvering.Strong leadership, decision-making, crisis-management, communication, and crew-management skills.Excellent knowledge of emergency response, firefighting, lifesaving, damage control, pollution prevention, and maritime security procedures.Strong understanding of risk assessment, permit-to-work systems, toolbox meetings, safety t.
