Someone who enjoys solving real client problems, understands the product behind the code and knows how to turn messy ideas into clear, shippable work.What you’ll doAs a Software Engineer, you’ll join our Digital Employee Management Platform squad. This is the part of Freeday that helps clients configure, coach and manage their digital employees. Think giving digital employees experiences, giving insight into their performance, tracking automatically where the gaps are, but also making setup easy and intuitive.You bring product sense, client empathy and engineering ownership. You understand what clients are trying to achieve, translate that into practical technical solutions and help decide what we should build, configure or leave for later. Some might call you a product engineer.This is not a role where tickets are handed to you fully written out. You’ll be involved earlier in the process. You’ll ask questions, shape ideas, write things down clearly and then help ship the solution.Your days might look like this:Turning client and implementation team input into scoped engineering workWorking with our conversational experts and turning their work and insights into a useful feature in our digital employee management platform.Writing a bet and convincing our Head of Product that we need it now. Building backend features, integrations and platform improvementsWorking mainly with Python and Django, while touching other parts of the stack when neededWriting clear technical designs, ADRs or product notes that others can understandJoining discussions with product, design, implementation and engineeringHelping ship client-specific projects without turning everything into custom workKeeping the product practical, scalable and useful in the real worldWhy FreedayWe are a Rotterdam based tech scale-up with big ambitions and a team that loves building things that matter. You want to understand why something is being built, who it helps and whether it actually solves the problem.You like working on product questions, but you still enjoy engineering. You can take a vague problem, ask the right questions and turn it into something clear enough to build. You are pragmatic by default. You do not overcomplicate things when a simple solution gets us moving.You probably recognize yourself in this:You have around 3 to 5 years of professional engineering experienceYou are strong in backend development, ideally with PythonExperience with Django or Django REST Framework is useful, but not a mustYou have worked on product features, not only technical ticketsYou can explain previous work in terms of the problem, the user and the trade-offsYou write clearly and can document technical choices in a way others understandYou are comfortable working with ambiguity and the associated freedom.You like talking to people outside engineering to understand what is really neededComfortable using tools like Cursor, Claude Code or similar agentic coding toolsYou speak English fluentlyYou are based in the Netherlands and can work from our office regularlyNice to haveExperience with AI, LLMs, agents, prompts or evalsExperience with GCP, Postgres, Grafana or basic opsExperience in a SaaS or scale-up environmentExperience with conversational AI, chatbots or voice agentsDutch communication skills are a plus, but not requiredThis role is probably not for you ifYou prefer to only work on deep backend, platform or infra problemsYou need fully written Jira tasks before you can get startedYou want to specialize deeply in one technical layerYou prefer research over shipping real product improvements (backed by research if needed)Interested?Check out www.freeday.ai or send us a message.
