The founding team brings experience from National Grid, Octopus Energy, and AWS, where they learned firsthand what breaks in existing systems and are now building what they wished had existed.Role DescriptionThis full-time, hybrid Software Engineer role is based in the London Area, United Kingdom. In this position, you will design, build, and maintain backend services that power Squid’s AI-enabled grid planning platform, focusing on reliability, performance, and scalability. You will collaborate closely with product, data, and grid domain specialists to translate complex operational requirements into robust software features and APIs. Day-to-day responsibilities include implementing new functionality, improving existing systems, writing tests, reviewing code, and participating in architectural discussions. You will also help refine development processes, contribute to technical documentation, and support continuous improvement of the engineering stack.The salary range for this role is around £70k-£110k + around 0.5% equity.QualificationsStrong foundation in Computer Science principles, including algorithms, data structures, and distributed systems.Proficiency in Software Development and Programming, with experience shipping production-quality code.Hands-on experience in Back-End Web Development, building APIs and working with databases and cloud infrastructure.Solid understanding of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and modern software design practices.Experience with at least one major programming language commonly used for backend services (e.g., Python, Go, TypeScript, Java, or similar).Comfort working in a collaborative environment, including code reviews, pair programming, and iterative product development.Ability to learn quickly in a fast-moving startup setting and to work autonomously on complex technical problems.Experience with energy systems, grid modelling, or related domains is a plus but not required.Relevant degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
