System High is looking for a Software Engineer specializing in frontend development to take ownership of the user-facing application layer of a new software product being built from the ground up.This is a true greenfield opportunity. You won’t be inheriting years of legacy frontend code or simply working through an established backlog. You’ll have the opportunity to help establish the frontend architecture, component patterns, development workflows, and technical standards that shape the application as it grows. We’re looking for an engineer who combines strong frontend development skills with broader software engineering fundamentals. You should be comfortable building modern web applications, integrating with APIs, working within GitHub and CI/CD workflows, and collaborating closely with backend engineers and other technical specialists. React is our preferred direction, but because the application is still being built, we value strong engineering fundamentals and experience with modern frontend frameworks over expertise in one narrowly defined stack. We also want someone who knows how to use modern AI-assisted development tools effectively. AI should make you faster at tasks like documentation, testing, scaffolding, debugging, and repetitive development but it shouldn't replace your ability to understand the code, challenge the output, and make sound engineering decisions. If you're energized by a blank canvas, enjoy solving problems without having every step prescribed, and want to see your technical decisions directly influence a new product, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact. What You’ll DoOwn the Frontend Application Layer: Help design and build the frontend from the ground up, establishing scalable patterns for components, routing, state management, performance, accessibility, and maintainability.Build Production-Ready Experiences: Translate product requirements and UI/UX concepts into responsive, intuitive, high-quality application features.Integrate with APIs: Build reliable integrations between the frontend and backend services, confidently working with API contracts, data structures, payloads, application state, error handling, and asynchronous workflows.Shape Frontend Architecture: Participate in technical decisions around frameworks, libraries, application structure, reusable components, testing strategies, and development standards.Work Across Engineering Boundaries: Collaborate with backend development, AI/technical specialists, QA, and product leadership to solve problems that span multiple parts of the application.Build Efficient Development Workflows: Work within GitHub, AWS/GIT-based workflows, and CI/CD pipelines to support reliable development, testing, integration, and deployment.Use AI to Increase Engineering Velocity: Apply AI-assisted development tools to accelerate documentation, testing, debugging, code scaffolding, and repetitive engineering tasks while independently reviewing, validating, and improving generated output.Automate Where It Makes Sense: Write lightweight scripts or utilities to eliminate repetitive tasks, manipulate data, support development environments, or improve engineering workflows.Deliver Iteratively: Break complex requirements into manageable technical tasks and deliver working software through an Agile/Scrum development process.Contribute Beyond Your Code: Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, sprint planning, estimation, and continuous improvement of the team's engineering practices. What Success Looks LikeWithin your first six months, you will have:Helped establish the technical foundation and architecture of a new frontend application.Built and delivered production-ready features that turn product requirements into an intuitive user experience.Established reliable integrations between the frontend and backend APIs.Contributed reusable components, patterns, and development standards that make the application easier to extend and maintain.Demonstrated the ability to independently troubleshoot issues across the frontend, API, data, and development workflow layers.Integrated AI-assisted development into your workflow in ways that measurably improve speed and efficiency without compromising engineering quality.Become a trusted technical partner to product leadership, backend development, QA, and other members of the engineering team.QualificationsMust Haves3–5 years of professional software engineering experience, with meaningful hands-on experience building modern frontend applications.Strong proficiency in JavaScript and/or TypeScript and modern component-based frontend development.Professional experience with React or another modern frontend framework. React experience is preferred, but strong engineers coming from comparable frameworks will be considered.Experience designing and building reusable frontend components and responsive application interfaces.Hands-on experience integrating applications with RESTful APIs or comparable backend services.Experience using Git and GitHub in a collaborative software engineering environment.Working knowledge of CI/CD concepts and modern software development workflows.Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including maintainability, testing, debugging, source control, and code review.Ability to work independently through ambiguous technical problems and clearly explain the reasoning behind your implementation decisions.Experience using AI-assisted software development tools for activities such as code generation, testing, documentation, debugging, or development acceleration—and the technical judgment to validate their output.Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in a remote engineering environment.Nice to HavesExperience helping build a new application, product, or significant feature from the ground up.Experience with React, Next.js, and TypeScript.Familiarity with GIT/AWS development workflows, CI/CD pipelines, or cloud-based application delivery.Experience working across frontend/backend boundaries or collaborating closely with backend engineering teams.Familiarity with scripting or automation using Node.js, Python, Bash, or similar technologies.Experience establishing frontend architecture, component libraries, design systems, or engineering standards.Experience with automated frontend or unit testing.Exposure to applications incorporating AI/LLM capabilities or other intelligent application services.Experience working in Agile/Scrum software development environments.Who Will Thrive In This RoleYou’re likely to enjoy this role if you like building more than maintaining. You don’t need someone else to define every implementation detail before you can get started. You’re comfortable taking a requirement, asking the right questions, evaluating different approaches, making a recommendation, and turning that recommendation into working software. You also recognize that modern engineering is changing. You’re interested in using AI and automation to remove repetitive work and increase your output, but you understand that engineering judgment still matters. You can explain your code, defend your technical decisions, identify when generated code is wrong, and improve a solution rather than accepting the first answer a tool provides. Most importantly, you want ownership. This is an opportunity to help establish something new rather than simply inherit what someone else already built.Additional InformationWhat is the Compensation Range for this role? The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $125,000 annually for full-time status.
