Software Engineer – Generative AI / AI ApplicationsIndustry: Energy & UtilitiesLocation: Brussels, BelgiumWork Model: Hybrid / Remote work policy applicableAbout the RoleA leading organization in the European energy sector is looking for an experienced Software Engineer with strong Generative AI expertise to join a software engineering team developing AI-centric applications.This is a hands-on engineering position combining strong software development capabilities with practical experience in LLMs, RAG, AI assistants and agentic workflows. You will design and build production-quality AI applications while helping establish reliable, secure and maintainable AI engineering practices.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign and implement AI-powered applications using LLMs, RAG and agentic workflow patternsDevelop backend services, APIs and integrations supporting AI applicationsDesign and optimize retrieval pipelines, including chunking, embeddings, vector search, hybrid search, metadata filtering and rerankingWork with LLM APIs and AI orchestration frameworksImplement evaluation, testing, monitoring and observability for AI applicationsDefine safe and practical approaches to tool use, human-in-the-loop approval and AI agentsCollaborate closely with software engineers and business/product stakeholdersEvaluate models and frameworks based on quality, cost, latency, maintainability and securityTroubleshoot challenges such as hallucinations, retrieval quality, latency, cost and unreliable AI outputsYour Profile5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer, preferably in backend or full-stack development1–2+ years of hands-on experience integrating LLMs or Generative AI services into software applicationsStrong programming skills in PythonPractical experience with RAG, embeddings, vector search and retrieval optimizationExperience with MCP, A2A, tool calling and/or multi-agent workflowsStrong understanding of maintainable software engineering practices, including testing, logging, CI/CD and deploymentExperience with AI application evaluation, including test datasets, quality metrics, regression testing and user feedbackGood understanding of cloud-native application developmentSecurity-conscious approach when working with internal or sensitive dataAbility to make pragmatic decisions about when to use AI, RAG or agents versus deterministic solutionsNice to HaveLangGraph, LangChain or Semantic KernelAI observability and evaluation toolsMicrosoft AzureMicrosoft AI ecosystem: Semantic Kernel, Microsoft Agent Framework, Microsoft Foundry or Microsoft 365 Agents SDK.NET / C#Vector databases or enterprise search platformsExperience within regulated, security-sensitive or enterprise environmentsLanguagesFluent English combined with fluent French OR Dutch.
