Specialist Acute Internal Medicine

The Specialist Acute Internal Medicine is responsible for the rapid assessment, diagnosis, stabilization, treatment, and ongoing management of adult patients presenting with acute medical illnesses requiring urgent hospital-based care. The physician works within the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Emergency Department interface, and inpatient medical services, ensuring timely, evidence-based, patient-centred care while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. The role focuses on improving patient outcomes, reducing unnecessary admissions, and ensuring compliance with Dubai Health Authority (DHA) regulations, hospital policies, and international clinical standards.Key ResponsibilitiesClinical ResponsibilitiesPerform comprehensive assessment and management of adults presenting with acute medical conditions.Diagnose, stabilize, and treat patients with a broad spectrum of acute illnesses, including:Cardiovascular emergenciesAcute respiratory disordersInfectious diseases and sepsisEndocrine and metabolic emergenciesAcute renal disordersGastrointestinal emergenciesNeurological presentationsElectrolyte abnormalitiesLead the management of patients admitted through the Acute Medical Unit.Develop evidence-based treatment plans and monitor patient progress.Identify deteriorating patients and escalate care appropriately to intensive care or relevant specialties.Interpret laboratory investigations, ECGs, imaging studies, arterial blood gases, and other diagnostic tests.Perform procedures within the scope of Acute Internal Medicine.Conduct daily ward rounds and coordinate multidisciplinary management.Provide inpatient consultations and support emergency department physicians.Refer patients to subspecialists when clinically indicated.Participate in rapid response and medical emergency teams.Patient CareDeliver safe, compassionate, and patient-centred care.Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, and follow-up care.Promote preventive healthcare and chronic disease management where appropriate.Ensure smooth discharge planning with appropriate follow-up arrangements.Quality & SafetyAdhere to DHA regulations, hospital policies, infection prevention protocols, and patient safety standards.Participate in clinical governance, mortality and morbidity meetings, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential electronic medical records.Report clinical incidents and contribute to risk management activities.Teaching & Professional DevelopmentSupervise and mentor junior doctors, residents, interns, and medical students.Participate in continuing medical education (CME), departmental meetings, and multidisciplinary case discussions.Engage in clinical research, publications, and quality improvement projects where applicable.QualificationsMBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.Completion of a recognised postgraduate qualification in Internal Medicine (MD, Arab Board, MRCP, FRCP, American Board, or equivalent recognised by DHA).Current BLS and ACLS certification.ExperienceMinimum 3 years of post-specialist clinical experience in Acute Internal Medicine or General Internal Medicine.Experience in an Acute Medical Unit, tertiary hospital, or emergency medicine interface is highly desirable.Experience managing critically ill adults and medical emergencies.Familiarity with multidisciplinary and evidence-based clinical practice.Knowledge & SkillsStrong clinical decision-making and diagnostic skills.Expertise in managing acute medical emergencies.Proficiency in interpretation of ECGs, radiology, laboratory investigations, and point-of-care diagnostics.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Effective leadership and teamwork abilities.Time management and ability to perform under pressure.Knowledge of DHA regulations, international clinical guidelines, and patient safety standards.Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR).Core CompetenciesClinical ExcellencePatient-Centred CareCritical ThinkingEmergency ResponseProfessionalism and EthicsLeadershipTeam CollaborationQuality ImprovementCultural SensitivityContinuous LearningWorking ConditionsHospital-based Acute Medical Unit and inpatient services.Rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.Participation in on-call rosters and emergency response teams.Performance Indicators (KPIs)Timely assessment and management of acute admissions.Compliance with clinical pathways and evidence-based guidelines.Patient safety and quality indicators.Clinical documentation accuracy.Patient satisfaction scores.Length of hospital stay and readmission rates.Participation in audits, CME, and quality improvement activities.Compliance with DHA licensing and hospital accreditation standards.
