These principles shape clinical practice, service delivery, and interprofessional collaboration throughout the region.Role Description This full-time on-site role is based in Whangarei and focuses on providing specialist intensive care medicine services within a multidisciplinary team. The Specialist (Consultant) in Intensive Care Medicine will manage critically ill patients, lead complex treatment plans, and provide clinical oversight in the Intensive Care Unit, including participation in ward rounds, case reviews, and acute assessments. The role includes contributing to on-call rosters, supporting continuity of care across the ICU and related services, and liaising closely with emergency, surgical, medical, and ancillary teams to ensure safe, high-quality care. The specialist will participate in teaching and supervision of junior medical staff, nursing staff, and allied health professionals, and engage in quality improvement activities, clinical governance, and service development. There is an expectation of involvement in guideline development, audit, and collaboration on initiatives that improve patient outcomes and align with Te Whatu Ora values.Qualifications Strong clinical expertise in Medicine and Critical Care Medicine, with the ability to manage complex, multi-system critical illness.Demonstrated ability in Training, including teaching, mentoring, and supervising junior clinicians and multidisciplinary team members.Recognized specialist qualification in Intensive Care Medicine and/or relevant medical specialty, and eligibility for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.Proven experience working in an ICU or high-dependency environment, preferably in a comparable healthcare system.Strong communication, teamwork, and leadership skills, with a commitment to equitable, culturally safe care and partnership under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.Experience in clinical governance, audit, or quality improvement, and willingness to participate in service development and innovation.
