You will create the design vision, identify opportunities for innovation across a diverse range of products.The vision is to be the most trusted authority on injury prevention, recovery, and therapy for athletes. The business includes products under both McDavid and Shock Doctor brands. This is a senior-level, hands-on role with end-to-end ownership of both product design and product development, from initial concept and design through prototyping, factory development, testing, validation, commercialization, and production. The ideal candidate combines strong industrial design capabilities with deep knowledge of product development, construction, ergonomics, materials, manufacturing, costing, testing, quality, and commercialization. This position will work across a diverse range of sporting goods, wearable products, and consumer products utilizing soft goods, molded components, mechanical assemblies, and electronic or powered functionality.The Senior Industrial Designer will work closely with Product Management, Sourcing, Quality, Regulatory/Compliance, Marketing, and overseas manufacturing partners while providing day-to-day leadership and mentorship to a Technical Designer/Developer reporting into this role.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Design LeadershipOwn the design vision, product design language, and aesthetic direction for the category, from initial research, ideation, and concept development through final productionCreate sketches, renderings, CAD models, presentations, technical drawingsDesign products with a strong understanding of ergonomics, anatomy, fit, comfort, performance, and usability across combinations of soft goods, textiles, foams, plastics, molded components, hardware, mechanical assemblies, and other materialsIdentify opportunities for innovation – new materials, differentiated product experiences, including incorporating electronic, powered, or interactive functionality Product Development & CommercializationOwn the product development process from concept through production approval, with support from Tech Designer/Developer following iso 13485 standard Review samples each round and provide clear, actionable revision direction back to the factory Select materials, construction, and manufacturing methods; partner with Sourcing on costing and value engineering without compromising design intentTroubleshoot development issues directly internal team (developer, sourcing), etcTeam & DocumentationWork day-to-day with the direct report from a Technical Designer/Product Developer, ensuring all outbound communication properly translates your direction into tech packs, specs, BOMs, and factory communicationCreating and reviewing technical documentation before it goes to manufacturing partnersMake sure design intent carries through accurately as products move through revisionsQuality, Compliance & Design ControlsAll the products in this category require documentation through our ISO 13485 quality system. In practice, this is a part of our design and development commercialization process.Provide design input that supports design control documentation and traceabilityParticipate in design reviews and support verification/validation activities Partner with Quality and Regulatory, who own compliance throughout product development.Other duties as assigned.POSITION SPECIFICS:This is a full-time positionTypical work hours and days are Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This position is based out of the Costa Mesa, CA officeThis position is expected to travel (domestic & international) approximately 20% This position requires in-office attendance at least 4 days per week (subject to increase in future).PAY TRANSPARENCY The Company is committed to fair, equitable, and transparent compensation. Final compensation will be determined by various factors such as your relevant work experience, education, certifications, skills, and geographic location.The salary range for this role in Costa Mesa, CA is $125-140k.In addition, you may be eligible for additional compensation, such as a bonus. Employees may also be eligible for a wide range of other benefits, including health & wellness benefits, retirement, time off, employee discounts, and others.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:Direct supervision of assigned staff.Recruit, train, lead, develop, evaluate and retain staff associated with related functions.Responsible for quarterly reviews of direct reports and ensuring all staff has outlined performance objectives.Work with Human Resources for coaching & performance counseling.REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:Bachelor’s degree in industrial design, Product Design, or a related field8-10+ years leading industrial design and product development for physical products, concept through mass productionExperience owning a category or product line's design direction and staying hands-on through development — not handing off after conceptStrong portfolio spanning creative concept work and commercialized, produced productsDirect experience working with factories and suppliers: reviewing samples, giving development comments, resolving manufacturing issuesProficiency in Illustrator, Photoshop, and CAD/rendering tools, word, excel Sporting goods, fitness, wearables, or medical/support product experience, and familiarity with ISO 13485 or similar quality-controlled environments, are a plusPHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT: Candidate must be able to successfully perform the essential functions of this job with ability to: be in a stationary position 50% of the time; occasionally move about inside the office to access fine cabinets, office machinery (such as a calculator, copy machine, printer, etc.); constantly operate a computer; occasionally ascend/descend stairs; constantly position self to maintain files in file cabinets; the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand; must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations; the ability to observe details at close range (within a few feed of the observer); and frequently move boxes weighing up to 20 pounds across office for various needs. Ability to work in outdoor weather conditions if projects/opportunities arise. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
