At BRK Tech, we partner across these businesses to build modern, scalable technology platforms that drive real-world, long-term impact.One of our Berkshire Hathaway portfolio companies is hiring a Mechanical AI/ML Engineer based anywhere in the Contingent U.S. (remote).Role Summary The Mechanical org keeps locomotives and railcars safe, reliable, and moving across one of the largest rail networks in North America. This role will help accelerate the transformation from reactive maintenance and manual inspection to predictive, AI-enabled operations. The Mechanical AI/ML Engineer will build, deploy, and scale machine learning solutions that leverage telemetry, fault codes, sensor data, work orders, oil analysis, images, and detector outputs to improve reliability, safety, and maintenance outcomes.Key Responsibilities Lead development and deployment of AI/ML solutions for predictive maintenance, failure prediction, and operational optimization.Build production-grade machine learning and deep learning models using telemetry, IoT, computer vision, and time-series data.Partner with mechanical, operations, product, and technology teams to identify high-value use cases and translate business needs into scalable solutions.Design, test, deploy, monitor, and continuously improve models in production environments.Develop automated defect detection solutions using computer vision and machine learning techniques.Analyze large-scale structured and unstructured datasets to uncover actionable insights and drive maintenance decisions.Build and maintain data pipelines and feature engineering workflows supporting model development and deployment.Present findings, recommendations, and solution impacts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.Contribute to architecture and engineering decisions across streaming, distributed, and cloud-based platforms.Monitor production performance, troubleshoot issues, and participate in operational support as needed.Required Qualifications 10+ years of experienceExperience building and deploying machine learning solutions in production environments.Strong programming skills in Python and SQL, Java or ScalaHands-on experience with machine learning, model development, deployment, monitoring, and lifecycle management.Experience working with large-scale data platforms, distributed systems, streaming technologies (Kafka, Spark, Flink), and SQL/NoSQL databases.Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure.Knowledge of predictive maintenance, telemetry, IoT, industrial analytics, time-series modeling, or reliability engineering.Experience building and evaluating deep learning or computer vision solutions.Strong problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder partnership skills.Ability to rapidly learn new technologies and apply them to operational business challenges.Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Data Science, or related field.Experience in rail, transportation, manufacturing, logistics, supply chain, or other industrial environments.Experience with Generative AI, LLMs, and applied AI engineering techniques.Knowledge of MLOps, CI/CD pipelines, model observability, and platform engineering best practices.Experience optimizing fleet reliability, maintenance planning, shop throughput, or asset performance.Key Problem Areas Locomotive reliability and failure predictionPredictive maintenance from telemetry and time-series dataComputer vision defect detection and automated inspectionFleet cost, overhaul planning, and work-scope optimizationShop labor and throughput forecastingThe Company recruits for positions located in the United States and does not market employment opportunities to individuals located in the European Economic Area or United Kingdom.
