Tailor my CV for this job — freeJob Description – Substation Design Engineer (Electrical)We are looking for an electrical engineer who can design substations end to end, produce the full drawing package, and price it. You will work on substations for utility-scale solar PV plants as well as standalone substation projects, taking each design from concept through construction and energization.Key responsibilitiesDesign and engineering
- Design HV/MV substations (e.g. 11 kV to 132 kV and above), both air-insulated (AIS) and gas-insulated (GIS).
- Prepare single-line diagrams (SLDs), equipment layouts, sections and general arrangement drawings.
- Develop protection, control and metering schemes, including protection SLDs and relay logic.
- Size and specify primary equipment: power transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, disconnectors, CTs, VTs, surge arresters, busbars and cables.
- Carry out earthing (grounding) design, lightning protection and direct-stroke shielding studies.
- Design auxiliary systems: LVAC, DC systems, batteries and chargers, and SCADA/communication interfaces.
- Perform or review electrical studies: load flow, short circuit, cable sizing, voltage drop, insulation coordination and relay coordination.Drawings and documentation
- Produce and check the full drawing package: SLDs, layouts, schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, block diagrams and earthing layouts.
- Prepare design reports, calculations, equipment specifications and bills of quantities.
- Review vendor drawings and technical submittals for compliance.Project and coordination
- Price complete substation packages for tenders and client budgets: material take-offs, BOQs, vendor quotations, and installation, testing and commissioning costs.
- Provide site support during construction, testing and commissioning, and resolve technical queries.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable standards (IEC, IEEE) and local utility and grid code requirements.Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Power) or equivalent.
- [5+] years of experience in substation design, with at least [2] complete substation projects delivered from design to energization.
- Strong command of primary and secondary design: SLDs, layouts, protection and control schematics.
- Able to prepare drawings personally in AutoCAD, not only review them.
- Proven ability to estimate and price a full substation from a design or tender package, using vendor quotes and current market rates.
- Working knowledge of IEC 61936, IEC 62271, IEC 60076, IEEE 80 and IEC 61850.
- Experience with at least one study tool such as ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory or CDEGS.
- Experience obtaining design approvals from a utility or transmission operator.
- Experience designing substations for utility-scale solar PV or other renewable plants (pooling/collector substations and grid-connection substations).
- Familiarity with MV collection systems, inverter stations and plant-level reactive power and harmonic requirements.
- Experience with grid code compliance studies and interconnection documentation for renewable projects.
- Exposure to BESS (battery storage) integration at substation level.
- Chartered or professional engineer status (e.g. PE, CEng) or local engineering society registration.
- Experience in EPC or consultancy environments working to tight project schedules.
