OverviewThe Technical Superintendent is responsible for day-to-day technical management, reliability, maintenance integrity and statutory compliance of assigned vessels. The role ensures that machinery and technical systems are maintained to required standards, supporting safe, compliant and efficient vessel operations. The Technical Superintendent is responsible for maintenance planning, defect management, technical compliance and technical support to onboard engineering teams, working closely with the Vessel Manager and other company functions to maintain vessel readiness and reliability.ResponsibilitiesManage and oversee the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) for assigned vessels, ensuring all scheduled maintenance is planned, tracked, and completed effectively. Monitor onboard maintenance execution to ensure compliance with planned schedules and company technical standards. Review defect reports and coordinate corrective actions to maintain vessel readiness. Plan and coordinate routine repairs, maintenance campaigns and technical interventions, escalating major repairs and complex technical issues in accordance with company proceduresIdentify recurring equipment failures and implement corrective measures to improve long-term reliability.Monitor machinery condition through lubricating oil analysis, cooling water analysis, vibration monitoring and other applicable condition monitoring programmes, ensuring abnormal results are investigated and corrective actions completed.Ensure critical equipment is identified and maintained in accordance with company requirements, including review of critical spare holdings and identification of deficiencies.Provide technical guidance and support to onboard engineering and operational teams, including the Chief Engineer. Ensure assigned vessels maintain compliance with all applicable Class, Flag State, statutory, and regulatory requirements. Manage class surveys, inspections, audits, and technical certifications to ensure continued vessel certification. Track and maintain all statutory certificates, survey schedules, and technical documentation. Prepare vessels for external audits, inspections, and client technical acceptance processes. Supervise vessel repair works carried out by contractors and service engineers and support drydocking and major repair projects as requiredReview and evaluate repair quotations, technical proposals, and service scopes.Prepare and review technical requisitions, specifications and scopes of work, ensuring spare parts, materials and services are technically suitable for the intended application.Coordinate attendance of service engineers and specialist contractors onboard or in shipyard. Approve technical work scopes for maintenance, repairs, and equipment servicing within delegated authority. Monitor repair quality, completion timelines, and compliance with technical specifications. Provide direct technical/maintenance support to vessel crews for troubleshooting and fault resolution. Investigate machinery breakdowns and technical failures and ensure appropriate root cause analysis (RCA) is undertaken for significant or recurring failures.Recommend and implement technical improvements to enhance vessel reliability, safety, and efficiency.Work closely with the Vessel Manager to align technical priorities, maintenance schedules, vessel availability and operational commitments.Balance technical reliability requirements with operational availability to support vessel utilization.Provide technical readiness assessments prior to mobilization, sailing, or major operational campaigns.Support operational planning by ensuring technical risks are identified, communicated, and mitigated.Monitor technical expenditure for assigned vessels, support preparation of vessel maintenance budgets and forecasts, and ensure significant technical expenditure is adequately justified. Skills and ExperiencePrevious experience as a Technical Superintendent or in a senior shipboard engineering role. Experience managing DP vessel technical operations is preferred. Strong experience with Class Society interactions, surveys, and statutory compliance. Experience supervising shipyard repairs, drydock projects, and major maintenance campaigns.Familiarity with marine planned maintenance systems and vessel technical reporting. Strong technical diagnostic and troubleshooting capability. Knowledge of marine engineering systems, machinery, and vessel maintenance practices. Effective planning, organization, and maintenance scheduling skills. Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving capability. Risk assessment and technical decision-making. Ability to manage contractors, shipyards, and technical vendors. Strong communication skills with offshore engineers, vessel crew, and shore-based stakeholders. Ability to work under pressure and prioritize urgent technical matters effectively. High attention to detail, compliance, and technical governance. QualificationsChief Engineer certification or equivalent marine engineering qualification. Relevant degree or diploma in Marine Engineering or related technical discipline preferred
