Sampoerna University was founded in Jakarta in 2015 to provide an internationally oriented university education built around American standards. From its inception, the University incorporated English-medium instruction, a U.S.-aligned credit structure, liberal arts based general education core curriculum, American benchmarked faculty standards, and academic systems designed around the expectations of U.S. accreditation.The University is fully licensed and accredited in Indonesia and is institutionally accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). It is the only university in Indonesia and Southeast Asia that currently holds U.S. institutional accreditation. As a result, the official name of the University is being changed from Sampoerna University to The American University of Indonesia in Q4 of 2026.AUI represents the next stage of development of the institution. AUI will create a substantially more intensive American university experience for students in Indonesia.
