Apply & track with Apply EdgeReports To: Director of TransportationKey ResponsibilitiesOperations & Fleet ManagementOversee daily scheduling, dispatching, routing, and asset allocation across a regional and nationwide network of 2,000+ power units.Monitor key operational metrics, including Fleet Utilization, Miles Per Truck (MPT), Deadhead Percentage, On-Time In-Full (OTIF) Delivery, and Cost Per Mile (CPM).Implement dynamic routing and load optimization strategies using modern Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and Telematics platforms.Manage fuel management programs, toll optimization, and driver dwell time reduction across all lanes.Safety, Compliance & Risk ManagementEnforce strict adherence to federal, state, and local transportation regulations (e.g., FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, Hours of Service/ELD rules).Partner with the Fleet Maintenance & Safety divisions to ensure all 2,000 vehicles remain in top mechanical condition, maintaining high Out-of-Service (OOS) standards and minimizing CSA score impacts.Lead incident response protocols, overseeing accident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action plans.Leadership & Workforce ManagementDirect, mentor, and build a high-performing operations team, including Terminal Managers, Dispatchers, Planners, and Support Staff.Partner with Driver Recruitment and Retention teams to maintain full driver capacity, lower turnover rates, and sustain high morale across a large driver pool.Conduct regular performance evaluations, establish clear KPIs for team members, and drive operational accountability.Financial Control & StrategyManage the transportation department budget, controlling costs related to fuel, driver compensation, equipment leasing, accessorial, and insurance claims.Drive continuous improvement initiatives (e.g., Lean/Six Sigma) to streamline workflows, eliminate operational bottlenecks, and lower overall total cost to serve.Evaluate fleet telematics data and operational analytics to present strategic recommendations to executive leadership.Required Qualifications & CompetenciesExperience: 8+ years of progressive leadership in transportation, freight, or fleet operations, with direct experience managing large-scale fleets (1,000+ power units preferred).Education: Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent operational leadership experience).
Technical Skills
Advanced proficiency with enterprise-grade TMS software (e.g., McLeod, TMW, Manhattan Associates, SAP) and Telematics/ELD solutions (e.g., Samsara, Geotab, Omnitracs).Regulatory Expertise: Deep operational knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, HOS, and hazmat regulations (if applicable).Analytical Skills: Strong ability to leverage data analytics, financial reporting, and KPI dashboards to drive business decisions.Leadership: Proven track record of managing multi-site teams and maintaining high driver retention rates in high-pressure environments.
