SummaryResponsible for the safe operation, maintenance, security, inspection and appearance of vessels.Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to, the following:Actively supports the Company Mission, Vision, Purpose and Values and bases decisions on these concepts.Possesses the skills necessary to maintain control of the vessel while backing up, turning corners and negotiating narrow passageways, etc.Possesses substantive knowledge of the U. S. Coast Guard “Rules of the Road” and perform the duties in accordance with those rules and regulations.Ensures that loads are property distributed, secured and within maximum height, width and weight limitations.Ensures that the barge (tow) is in trim and safe to move.Maintains daily logs, file reports as required by Government regulations and the Company, perform regular maintenance and inspection of vessel, before and after a trip and reports all incidents no matter how insignificant or minor they may appear.Performs or assists mechanics in repair.Possesses thorough knowledge of the safe and proper methods for towing and mooring other vessels.Has capability of docking without damaging barge, vessel, pier, mooring or docking facility.Has awareness of height and width clearances of bridges, power lines and other overhead obstructions.Reads and understands charts, radar, GPS, compasses and other navigational devices.Determines course and towing speed based on specialized knowledge of winds, weather, tides and currents.Possesses and has the ability to make determinations as to the seaworthiness of the vessel and/or tow, and has the sole responsibility for determining whether or not to get underway.Understands the periodic requirement to man lengthy tows and stand by at a distant jobsite for extended periods of time.Ensures the exterior and interior of the vessel are cleaned and free of trash.Since the unexpected absence of a Tugboat Captain could shut down an operation or job; when possible, Captains are required to give advance notice of any absences.Sets an example in observance of Company policies and procedures; including safety. Attends any safety or training classes as required.Performs other job related duties as may be required.SafetyIntegrates safety rules, policies and practices in all work elements; installation, movement and storage.Prevents and /or corrects unsafe conditions as the need arises. Ensures that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed.Brings problems to the attention of the Superintendent, Area Manager and/or Safety Department.Care and Maintenance of tools and equipmentCleans and maintains all tools to perform maintenance on equipment/vessel.Supervisory ResponsibilitiesThis position is not a supervisory position but the Captain will have supervisory responsibilities over the crew.Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Education and/or ExperienceHigh school diploma or general education degree (GED) or two (2) years related experience and /or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.Possesses the experience necessary to safely maneuver large tows in tight spaces.Other skills and abilitiesMust be at least 18 years old, have reliable transportation to work and able to pass a Marine/Coast Guard physical/drug screen.Must have at least a valid U. S. Coast Guard “Master of Towing Vessels”, radar observer, valid medical card and Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).Physical demandsThe physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Th e employee must regularly lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds.This position requires the agility and coordination to be able to maintain balance on a rocking platform.A Captain must be able to live in close quarters with other crew members.A Captain must have the mental disposition to accept pressure and get the job done in spite of unforeseeable conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have good coordination, depth perception and manual and foot dexterity. A Captain must sit/stand for long periods of time and is subject to vibration and jolting motions.A Tug Captain must meet U.S. Coast Guard physical guidelines.Work EnvironmentThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
