WordPress Developer

As a WordPress Developer, you will work under the guidance of the Lead Web Developer and collaborate with designers, developers, project managers, and other team members throughout the development and deployment lifecycle.Position OverviewIn this role, you will develop accessible, custom WordPress themes from scratch using Underscores or other accessible starter WordPress themes.As a WordPress Developer, you should be well versed in the entire development lifecycle, with an eye for turning wireframes and mockups into effective, responsive, and accessible user experiences.You will be responsible for developing, deploying, maintaining, and enhancing WordPress websites. This includes adding functionality to existing features, developing new features, troubleshooting and documenting bugs and fixes, and ensuring websites remain secure, performant, accessible, and maintainable.A key part of this role is also deploying and maintaining WordPress applications in cloud environments. You should be comfortable working with modern deployment practices, including GitHub Actions and CI/CD pipelines, to automate and standardize deployments across development, staging, and production environments.You will also be responsible for creating appropriate technical and user documentation and, where required, providing user training following website deployment.Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop accessible, responsive, and reusable custom WordPress themes.Translate Figma designs, wireframes, and mockups into high-quality WordPress implementations.Develop and maintain custom WordPress functionality, themes, and plugins.Integrate Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) and other WordPress components following development best practices.Integrate and consume REST APIs and third-party services.Maintain and enhance existing WordPress websites.Troubleshoot, document, and resolve application and deployment issues.Optimize websites for performance, security, accessibility, and SEO.Deploy WordPress websites across development, staging, and production environments.Deploy and maintain WordPress applications on cloud-hosted infrastructure.Build, configure, and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions.Automate deployment workflows, including code validation, builds, testing, and deployment where applicable.Manage environment-specific configurations and deployment processes securely.Use Git and GitHub effectively for source control, branching, pull requests, code reviews, and release management.Monitor deployments and troubleshoot issues related to cloud environments and CI/CD pipelines.Create technical documentation, deployment documentation, and user manuals.Provide user training following website deployment when required.Required Technical Skills & KnowledgePHPHTML5MySQLCSS and SCSSJavaScript and jQueryWordPress architecture and development best practicesCustom WordPress theme developmentAdvanced Custom Fields (ACF)Accessibility and the ability to integrate accessibility requirements into WordPress themesResponsive design and mobile-first developmentGit and GitHub source controlGitHub ActionsCI/CD pipeline development and maintenanceWordPress deployment to cloud-hosted environmentsUnderstanding of development, staging, and production deployment workflowsSecure management of environment variables, credentials, and deployment secretsFamiliarity with cPanel and traditional hosting environmentsDeveloping and consuming REST APIsAbility to build reusable and maintainable theme components following development best practicesWebsite performance optimization and security best practicesTroubleshooting production and deployment-related issuesQualifications5+ years of proven experience as a WordPress Developer, with a strong portfolio demonstrating custom WordPress themes and/or plugin development.Strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and MySQL.Strong understanding of WordPress architecture, theme development, and plugin development.Experience with responsive design principles and mobile optimization.Experience using Git and GitHub in collaborative development environments.Hands-on experience deploying web applications or WordPress websites to cloud environments.Experience creating or maintaining CI/CD workflows, preferably using GitHub Actions.Understanding of automated deployment practices and environment management.Strong understanding of web development best practices, accessibility, performance, and security.Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.Ability to troubleshoot application, hosting, and deployment issues.Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary team.Nice to HaveExperience with AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, or other cloud hosting platformsExperience with managed WordPress hosting platformsFamiliarity with Docker and containerized deploymentsExperience with automated testing as part of CI/CD pipelinesBootstrap, Foundation, or other CSS frameworksKnowledge of FigmaKnowledge of Jira SoftwareKnowledge of PhotoshopFamiliarity with DNS, SSL/TLS certificates, CDN configuration, caching, and domain managementFamiliarity with monitoring, logging, backup, and disaster-recovery practices for WordPress websites
