Materials Process Engineer
Supernova · Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain
Tailor my CV for this job — freeAre you a hardcore engineer / scientist? One of those few people that makes the difference. We’ve been getting things done that no other team has ever achieved. VLM is a technology capable of processing materials 1,000x more viscous than any other 3D printing resin, and we’ve then turned that viscosity into also unprecedented material properties, reaching automotive & aerospace properties (or literally printing rocket propellants). And how we did it? By being brave. Not taking no for an answer. With a lot of creativity. And working harder than the rest. All those are human factors, not technology factors. We did it because of our team DNA, and we’re now looking for similar minded people to conquer new limits.Your missionAs a Materials Process Engineer at Supernova, you will be the link between the photopolymers we formulate and the machines we developed to process them. Key responsibilitiesOptimize material processability on our proprietary systems: cure behavior, exposure, lamination, release from the build plate and film, and peel/lift motion.Represent the Materials team in the weekly part production meeting: report on material status and changes, flag risks, and bring material processability issues back to the lab.Troubleshoot machine and processability issues from a materials point of view and propose formulation or handling fixes.Keep material versions, process parameters and test data documented and traceable as you move materials from Materials to Engineering to production.Prepare photopolymer batches, from small development mixes to larger batches, following documented formulations and mixing procedures, including vacuum mixing and degassing.Develop and run incoming quality control on raw materials (oligomers, monomers, photo-initiators, fillers and pigments) and release checks on mixed batches, such as viscosity, appearance, density and cure tests, keeping batch records traceable.Run manufacturing cycles to qualify each material, and support mechanical and thermal characterization such as tensile, hardness and DMA testing.Follow and help improve lab best practices and H&S procedures for handling resins and chemicals.About youBSc or MSc in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science or a related field.Hands-on lab experience with polymers or formulated products: accurate weighing, mixing and basic characterisation. An understanding of how polymer chemistry affects processing and performance, such as viscosity, curing and mechanical properties.A methodical, root-cause approach to problems, and comfort working at the machine alongside engineers as well as in the lab.Careful record-keeping, and confident handling data in Excel.Confident presenting results and raising issues in meetings with other teams.Fluent in English.Experience with vat photopolymerisation (SLA, DLP or LCD) or UV-curable resins is a plus but not required.Experience running production equipment or process optimization, such as DOE, is a plus.Experience with QC methods, viscosity or rheology measurement, or mechanical testing is a plus. Why Supernova?Innovate at the forefront: Drive innovation in Additive Manufacturing, shaping the next generation of industrial AM solutions.Creative and analytical synergy: Thrive where creative problem-solving meets analytical rigour, making a real impact on pioneering projects.Growth and learning: Develop continuously at the edge where engineering, science and manufacturing meet.Ownership and accountability: Own your role and tasks, and see the tangible impact of your work on every material we ship.
