Metals Market Research Analyst
Shanghai Metals Market · Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Tailor my CV for this job — freeABOUT SMMShanghai Metals Market (SMM) has spent more than twenty years building the price references and market intelligence that the metals industry runs on. Producers, traders, consumers, and financial institutions across Asia use our spot price benchmarks as a common language for pricing and settlement. We are a team of 600+ professionals with hubs in Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur, and London. Our next chapter is Southeast Asia, and Ho Chi Minh City is where it starts — we are assembling the first local team and looking for the person who will help build it.━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━THE ROLEVietnam's metals market moves quickly, and much of what happens on the ground is documented neither in English nor in data. We are hiring a Metals Market Research Analyst to close that gap. You will be SMM's eyes and ears in Vietnam: following what producers, traders, and buyers are actually doing, turning it into structured data and written insight, and feeding it into coverage that clients around the world pay for. This is a hands-on first hire in a new market — you will shape how we cover Vietnam rather than inherit an existing playbook.━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━KEY RESPONSIBILITIESMarket coverage and data
- Track and interpret developments across Vietnam's metals value chain, with a focus on copper, aluminium, lead, zinc, tin, and steel.
- Gather, structure, and interpret supply and demand fundamentals, maintaining the reference dataset behind our Vietnam coverage.Price assessment
- Contribute to the local assessment and publication of SMM's spot price assessments for key metals in the Vietnamese market.Insight delivery
- Publish regular market commentary and weekly updates, and produce deeper thematic research when the market calls for it.Network and market presence
- Develop a trusted network of contacts among Vietnamese producers, traders, consumers, and trade bodies — the source of most of what we will come to know about this market.
- Represent SMM at industry gatherings and roadshows, and work with the commercial team on client visits and enquiries.━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Degree in metallurgy, materials science, economics, finance, international trade, or a comparable discipline.
- Professional-level fluency in Vietnamese (native or near-native).
- Working proficiency in English or Mandarin Chinese.
- One to three years in market research, metals, or an adjacent field is advantageous — we are equally open to strong recent graduates.
- Clear analytical reasoning, quick to absorb unfamiliar subject matter, and a real interest in how prices are made.
- Confident communicator who can work unsupervised and meet deadlines.
- Practical command of Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE HERE
- You are comfortable being the first person on the ground, building the map as you go.
- You ask why a number moved before you report that it moved.
- You own your deliverables end to end rather than waiting to be handed a brief.
- You work well with colleagues from different cultures and treat feedback as input, not criticism.
- Distance does not slow you down — you can coordinate with Shanghai and other Asian offices across time zones.━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━WHAT WE OFFER
- A defined path: deepen into a specialist track (Analyst → Senior Analyst → Industry Expert), move into research team leadership, or grow into Country Manager for Vietnam.
- A founding seat: the chance to define SMM's Vietnam coverage from day one, with real backing from Shanghai — direct coaching from senior analysts and managers, not a remote brief.
- Structured learning: several training trips a year to SMM's Shanghai headquarters, working alongside the analysts who built our benchmarks.
- Competitive salary, performance-based bonus, health insurance, and paid leave.━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━We are open to promising recent graduates and to people who want to build something rather than inherit it. If you are analytical, curious, and interested in the metals market, we would like to hear from you.
