SCR is a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment with state-of-the-art laboratory and computing facilities. We work on applied research projects in the physical sciences to meet the current and future challenges of the industry. At SCR, we strike a balance between academia and industry with projects from early-stage research all the way to solution development for real business challenges.SCR is a distinctive marquee-like structure dominating the High Cross site on the western outskirts of Cambridge, England. The centre provides extensive laboratory and office facilities and is home to more than 100 scientists, technicians and domain experts.Job Summary: We are seeking a creative and self-motivated Research Scientist with expertise in experimental physics, sensing, instrumentation, and measurement science. The scientist will develop and evaluate measurement methods for complex multiphase flow and process systems, including gas-liquid, liquid-liquid, and flows involving solids. This will include identifying measurement requirements, integrating sensors and data-acquisition systems, and assessing the reliability and limitations of measurements under challenging operating conditions. The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary research team, combining experiments, measurements, physical and mathematical models, data-driven methods, and optimisation to improve understanding of complex systems and support the development of new technologies.
Responsibilities
Develop and evaluate sensing, instrumentation, and experimental diagnostic methods for multiphase flow and process systems.Select, integrate, calibrate, and validate sensors, data-acquisition systems, and instrumentation, and assess measurement performance, uncertainty, and operating limitations.Apply signal processing, image analysis, and data-driven methods to extract physical information from measurements and infer properties that cannot be observed directly.Develop high-quality experimental datasets for the calibration and validation of physical, reduced-order, optimisation, and data-driven models.Contribute to the development of sensing-enabled monitoring, diagnostics, optimisation, and control approaches.Work collaboratively with experimental scientists, mathematical modellers, data scientists, optimisation scientists, and domain experts to translate scientific and engineering challenges into suitable research approaches.Communicate findings through technical reports, publications, conference presentations, patent applications, and engagement with internal and external collaborators.
Qualifications
PhD in experimental physics, applied physics, measurement science, instrumentation, engineering, or a related discipline.Strong expertise in sensing, instrumentation, measurement science, or experimental diagnostics.Experience developing and applying measurement techniques to complex physical or engineering systems, including sensor integration, calibration, data acquisition, instrument control, and experimental data analysis.Understanding of measurement uncertainty and experimental-data quality, with experience applying signal processing, image analysis, or other quantitative techniques to experimental measurements.Scientific programming skills for instrument interfacing, experiment automation, signal or image processing, and data analysis.Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and connect measurement requirements with experimental, modelling, data science, and optimisation activities.Experience with fluid flow, multiphase systems, process monitoring, advanced sensing techniques, soft sensors, model validation, industrial control systems, or process automation would be advantageous.SLB is an equal employment opportunity employer.
