Software Architect - Backend

Shipturtle | 5+ years’ experience | Full-timeThe Challenge:Shipturtle powers multi-vendor marketplaces by connecting merchants, vendors, commerce platforms and fulfilment partners. Our backend currently handles around 2 million API calls a day. We’re setting out to scale that to 15–20 million, while improving speed and reliability. This is an opportunity to take meaningful ownership of the platform’s technical evolution: challenge existing assumptions and make the hard architecture calls. You’ll have the freedom to rethink components and technology choices, not just maintain what already exists.What you will own: Own the backend architecture and roadmap for the next stage of scale.Find and remove bottlenecks across APIs, databases, queues, caching and background processing.Design resilient distributed and event-driven systems for high-volume integrations, webhooks and unpredictable traffic.Modernize the platform where it makes sense, choosing pragmatically between improving the current stack, modularizing services and introducing new technologies.Improve database performance, data access patterns, concurrency and operational reliability.Partner with engineering leads, write and review code, lead critical implementations and raise the team’s engineering standards.Work with infrastructure colleagues on capacity, observability, availability and cloud cost efficiency.What you bring5+ years building backend systems, including hands-on experience scaling applications.Strong fundamentals in system design, distributed systems, concurrency, API design and performance engineering.Deep practical experience with relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL, plus caching and messaging technologies.Experience with backend frameworks such as Laravel/PHP, Java/Spring Boot, Node.js or comparable technologies.Why this is a meaningful role: A real scale challenge to integrate a heavy SaaS platform through an ambitious 8-10x growth.Real ownership: influence foundational architecture and technical direction.
